Family Photos
It’s that time and I am SO excited to document your family. I recognize that not all family members are down for this event, but I believe so strongly in the value of documenting these fleeting times with our loved ones. The kids grow so fast, we work so hard to provide for them that it is sometimes easy to forget details. It is my hope that capturing this tiny moment in time will bring you lifetimes of joy and happiness.
If you have worked with me before, you know that it is my ultimate goal that you and your family have fun!!!
I like to let the kids ‘rule the show’ and guide us through the session. If we try to force them to do something they don’t want to do, no one will have fun and the images will show that. If we just let them lead, then we all get to have fun. Talk it up in advance - let them know we are going on an adventure. Maybe plan a fun dinner after (you are all dressed up after all!) or entice them with an ice cream date!
Here is what to expect:
Once you select your location, I will finalize a meet time with you. You can expect we will be photographing for about an hour to an hour and a half. We should finalize these details at least one week in advance.
Bring snacks and water.
Bring a towel to dry off with in the event that you want to get your toes wet!
Bring bug spray and/or sunscreen.
I want you to have fun, seriously! Play and be silly. Dance and let the kids get dirty. I will ask you to look at the camera when desired, but mostly I am looking to capture those incredibly sweet in between moments.
Within two weeks of the session, you will receive the full gallery of digital images and a print release. You can print where ever you like, but I would recommend printing through your online gallery. I will be offering Holiday Card sales!
Wardrobe Pointers
For some, this is the easiest and most enjoyable part. Others….straight up dread this part! Here are some suggestions for selecting the most flattering and photogenic wardrobe for your family.
Start with the most difficult in the family to dress (that is ALWAYS me!!). Find the article of clothing that makes that person the feel the most beautiful/handsome/comfortable. If you are uncomfortable, it will show in the images. Once you have found that person’s clothing, dress everyone else around that.
Think about combining color pallets with a mix of solids and patterns. But always remember, less is MORE!
Stay away from logos, large branding icons, and text on clothing.
Think about texture and how the image may move in the wind, or look with light shining through, or if you are willing to get a little wet - how will it look wet?
Props - hats, kids purses, scarves, blankets to sit on - these are all fun items to include in a session
Combinations - I will intentionally photograph different pairings of the family so think about how each outfit not only works on its own or within the larger group, but also with smaller pairings (dad and son vs mom and son vs sister and son, for example).
View the albums below for some ideas ranging from dressy to casual and even some with an outfit change. You can always text me with ideas and questions.
Locations
Below are a few of my favorite locations to photograph families. They are easy to access, the beauty is within quick walking distance and they are all just absolutely stunning. Check out some of the teaser galleries below. In some cases I have multiple galleries for the same location - in those cases, take a peek at the dates. It will help give you a better idea what the foliage is looking like during that time of the season (give or take).
When selecting a location, think about the views, the colors, the feel. Does it have access to water and is that preferred or not? I love taking off our shoes and getting our toes wet. It’s fun for the kiddos and makes for a nice variety of images.
